DrinCloud vs TheraNest: an honest comparison for mental health practices

First, the name. TheraNest is now Ensora Mental Health. Therapy Brands renamed itself Ensora Health on April 7, 2025, the plans live at ensorahealth.com/pricing/mental-health/, and its own pages still sell the product as TheraNest by Ensora Health, so both names are current. We keep the old one in the title because that is what people type into Google. DrinCloud is the US edition of a clinic system with 12+ years and 8,000+ clinics in 14 countries, built for practices paid directly by the client. If you bill insurance, TheraNest wins this comparison and you should jump to block seven. Our case starts at the second clinician: $159 against $188 with two, $179 against $282 with three, $407 against $564 with six. Prices on pricing, the rest in all comparisons.

The final score
DrinCloud
3.6/5
★★★★☆
TheraNest
3.3/5
★★★☆☆

TheraNest is a strong product and this is a close page. It is built around the insurance claim: 50 claims and 50 eligibility checks a month on the $59 Advanced plan, unlimited on the $89 Premier plan, payer enrollment with no commission taken, ERAs that post themselves, the Wiley Practice Planner, eRx with a PDMP check, and a revenue cycle service you can hand the whole mess to. It also beats us where insurance is not involved: a 21-day trial of its top plan with no credit card, a phone support line, a client app for iOS and Android, unlimited chart storage on the $29 plan, automatic no-show fees, and unlimited administrative users.

The math turns at clinician number two. One therapist is cheaper there, $29 or $64 with Ensai against our $49 and $69. Then every therapist charges again at $59 plus $35 for the AI, while Clinic covers 1 to 3 users for $119 and Medical Center covers 4 to 30 for $287. Two clinicians with AI for both is $159 here against $188 there, six is $407 against $564. Their card processing is 2.99% + $0.30 on their own processor; our clients run their own Stripe at the standard 2.9% + $0.30. Our scribe is $20 a provider against their $35.

Methodology: data comes from the public pages of ensorahealth.com (the mental health pricing page, the TheraNest product and feature pages, the FAQ and the Ensora Health renaming announcement) and from drincloud.com, checked on November 2, 2026. Each cell is scored Yes = 1 point, partial or plan-limited = 0.5, No or Not documented = 0; purely informational pricing rows do not score. A block's score is its points divided by its scored rows, on a 5-point scale, and the final score is the weighted average of the seven scored blocks: pricing and transparency 20%, clinical record and AI 25%, scheduling and client communication 15%, getting paid without an insurer 15%, languages and client experience 10%, insurance billing and prescribing 10%, and integrations and data 5%. This comparison is published by DrinCloud: we are an interested party, which is exactly why every claim points to a public source with a date, and why we mark a cell 'Not documented' instead of 'No' when the vendor's site is silent. If you find an outdated cell, write to info@dricloud.com and we will correct the data and the score.

DrinCloud figures are the annual rate; monthly billing runs $59, $128, $143, $344 and $689.

Two different shapes, and the sticker settles nothing. TheraNest charges per therapist and wins the solo row at $29 against our $49, or $64 against our $69 with AI on. Then the per-seat model turns on them, because every hire charges again while Clinic covers 1 to 3 users for $119. Their real wins here: 21 days of the top plan with no card, unlimited free admin users, every add-on priced. Ours: band pricing, a bigger annual discount, no AMA line in December. See pricing.

The real math

The real math: four invoices

ScenarioDrinCloudTheraNest
Solo therapist with AI notes$69/moEssential $49 plus the $20 scribe$64/moEssentials $29 plus Ensai $35. They win this one
2 clinicians, AI for both$159/moClinic $119 covers 1 to 3 users, plus 2 x $20$188/mo2 x $59 plus 2 x $35
3 clinicians, AI for all three$179/moClinic $119 still covers all three, plus 3 x $20$282/mo3 x $59 plus 3 x $35
6 clinicians, AI for everyone$407/moMedical Center $287 covers 4 to 30, plus 6 x $20$564/mo6 x $59 plus 6 x $35

Arithmetic with the rates on ensorahealth.com/pricing/mental-health/ and drincloud.com/pricing, checked November 2, 2026, with AI notes on for every clinician and telehealth excluded except where stated. TheraNest rows use Advanced, its cheapest plan carrying online booking, custom forms and claims. DrinCloud rows are the annual rate.

Ask the two questions we would ask before signing anything: what does the second clinician cost, and what does AI for the whole team cost. At TheraNest the answers are $59 and $35 a head, every month. Here the second and third cost nothing because Clinic covers 1 to 3 users, and four through thirty cost nothing because Medical Center covers that band. The crossover is clinician number two: below it they are cheaper and we say so. More on the AI scribe.

The heaviest block and the closest one. TheraNest owns the therapy specifics: a template library, the Wiley Practice Planner, group notes with group reports, and unlimited chart storage on the $29 plan while we meter it by band. Three things keep the scores apart. Custom forms do not exist below $59, the assistant that actually records is always a $35 add-on, and its AI documents rather than advises. Ours drafts at $20, answers clinical questions on every plan, and carries history forward. See the AI scribe.

The second closest block, and TheraNest earns it. Automated phone call reminders, no-show fees that apply themselves, group rosters that survive a roster change and Apple Calendar on top of Google are four things we do not match, and its reminders are unlimited on Premier while we sell SMS in $36 packs. Two rows go our way for reasons that have nothing to do with therapy: our product grew up in buildings with waiting rooms. Their booking is a request you approve. For therapists working alone, fine.

Card rates quoted for DrinCloud are the standard Stripe US rates on the client's own Stripe account, not a DrinCloud fee.

Read this block as a fit question, not a verdict: it is written for a practice the client pays directly. TheraNest's billing is built around the claim and it is good at that, with invoices feeding claims, ERAs posting themselves and every adjustment logged against the appointment, which is tighter bookkeeping than ours. What is missing is the cash-pay furniture: a deposit at booking, a sliding scale on the client record, a priced estimate they sign. And its card rate sits above standard Stripe. See superbills.

Three wins for TheraNest we will not argue with. It answers a telephone, which we do not. It has a client app for iOS and Android, which we do not. And it has years of US therapists who already know the software, which matters the week you hire someone. Our ground is the bilingual practice: the software in each user's language, and a language field on the client that decides what language their reminders, portal and documents arrive in. More for psychologists.

Five point zero against zero point six, and no copywriting changes it. If payers pay your rent, TheraNest is the correct purchase and you can stop reading: it files the claim, checks the benefit, enrolls you with the payer, posts the ERA, prescribes with a PDMP check and will run the whole revenue cycle for a fee. We built none of it on purpose, because that machinery is what makes most mental health software heavy, and a cash-pay practice never touches it. We also lack ONC certification, which is voluntary and matters only for Medicare and MIPS. See alternatives to DrinCloud.

Both run on HIPAA terms and both let your numbers out, so the real question is who does the moving. Our importer is free, takes any Excel or XML file and you run it yourself, which is the part people underestimate until an import comes out wrong and has to be redone at somebody else's pace. TheraNest documents a switch from SimplePractice and exports reports to Excel, but no full account export. Neither of us has a developer story worth bragging about.

The honest answer

Which one fits you?

TheraNest is the better fit if...

  • You bill insurance. Claims, eligibility checks, payer enrollment with no commission taken, ERAs posting themselves, and an RCM service you can hand the whole thing to. We score 0.6 against their 5.0 there.
  • You prescribe. eRx with a PDMP check is $135 to set up plus $45 a therapist; we print or send PDFs, which fails in CA, FL, NY, MI, MN and DE.
  • You are one therapist and want the cheapest real start: $29, or $64 with Ensai, against our $49 and $69, plus 21 days of Premier with no credit card.
  • You want ready-made therapy documentation on day one: a template library plus the Wiley Practice Planner, free on Premier.
  • You run groups: group scheduling with rosters, group notes, group reports and unlimited group telehealth from Advanced.
  • You want a phone number to call, a client app, automatic no-show fees and unlimited chart storage on the entry plan. We have none of those four. Also useful: TherapyNotes vs SimplePractice.

DrinCloud is the better fit if...

  • Your clients pay you directly and an insurance engine is dead weight you would rather not fund.
  • You are two clinicians or more: $159 against $188 with two, $179 against $282 with three, $407 against $564 with six, AI for everyone on both sides.
  • You want the AI price written down and low: $20 a provider against their $35, the clinical assistant included, the booking chatbot $20 a month per practice.
  • You do not want a plan ladder. Our form builder, the superbills and the scribe all work from the $49 plan; their custom forms start at $59 and the recording assistant is always an add-on.
  • Part of your caseload speaks Spanish or Portuguese: the software in each user's language, and reminders, portal and documents in each client's language.
  • You would rather not see a $19.50 AMA license line per therapist on your bill every December.
  • You run a physical front desk: tablet check-in with a visit rating, a waiting room call screen, a waitlist that refills cancellations by itself.
  • You charge cash-pay the way it actually works: a deposit at booking, a sliding scale on the client record, a priced estimate they sign, and a superbill with NPI, EIN, CPT and ICD-10.
  • You want your own Stripe account holding the money at the standard 2.9% plus $0.30, instead of 2.99% plus $0.30 on a processor you did not choose.
  • You want the move in free and the exit open: Excel or XML in, CSV and PDF out, whenever you want. Prices on pricing.
FAQ

Questions about this comparison

Is TheraNest the same product as Ensora Mental Health?
Yes. Therapy Brands announced its new company name, Ensora Health, on April 7, 2025, and the mental health product is the one that used to be sold as TheraNest. The plans now live at ensorahealth.com/pricing/mental-health/, its own pages call the product TheraNest by Ensora Health, and its blog refers to Ensora Mental Health, formerly TheraNest. Nothing was discontinued and nothing was replaced: the software is the same and the company name changed. We keep TheraNest in the title of this page because that is still what people search for.
Which one is actually cheaper?
It depends on headcount, and the crossover is clinician number two. One therapist with AI notes is $64 at TheraNest, Essentials at $29 plus Ensai at $35, against $69 here, Essential at $49 plus the $20 scribe. They win that. From two clinicians up we win, because they charge per therapist and we charge per band: two with AI for both is $159 against $188, three is $179 against $282, six is $407 against $564. Then add their $19.50 AMA license per therapist each December.
What does the AI cost on each side?
Ours is $20 a month per provider for the scribe that records the visit and drafts the note, $20 a month per practice for the booking chatbot on your website, and nothing for the clinical assistant, which is included on every plan. Theirs is the Ensai Session Assistant at $35 a month per provider, promoted at $17.50 for the first three months, with Ensai Notes Enhancement and AI case summaries inside the plans. Both numbers are printed on both pricing pages, which is more than most vendors in this market manage.
Can I migrate from TheraNest to DrinCloud?
Yes, and the import is free because you run it yourself. Export your client list from TheraNest, then upload the Excel or XML file with the importer built into DrinCloud. Notes exported as PDFs attach to each client's file pool, so history stays one click away. If an import did not come out right you delete it whole and upload it again corrected, with no fee and nobody to wait for. Signup is online in about 3 minutes and one month is the smallest commitment we sell.
Where does the final score come from?
From the tables on this page and nothing else. Every scored row gives each product 1, 0.5 or 0 points, each block becomes a score out of 5, and the final number is the weighted average with the weights in the methodology. DrinCloud comes out at 3.6 and TheraNest at 3.3, with their 5.0 in insurance billing inside that average at 10%. Change the weights to match your own practice and the answer changes: weight insurance at 40% and they win this page outright.
Is this comparison impartial?
It is published by DrinCloud and we say so in the methodology. That is why every TheraNest cell points to its pricing page, a named feature page or its FAQ with a check date, why features we could not find read 'Not documented' instead of 'No', and why the block they win is printed in the same type size as ours. It is also why this page opens by telling an insurance practice to buy TheraNest, and why we concede the solo price, the free trial, the phone line and the client app.
